Productivity Improvements in Health Care Delivery

               - on applying industrial engineering concepts in the operating room

Andrew MacDonald, P. Eng., EIT – University Health Network

When thinking of engineering in the context of healthcare, the achievements of high tech medical devices and implants usually come to mind. A much smaller but growing area in healthcare for engineers, particularly industrial engineers, is in the improvement of the delivery of care itself.

Industrial engineers in healthcare, sometimes known as management engineers, offer a broad range of skills to improve the complex processes involved in providing patient care. In recent years University Health Network (UHN), one of Canada's largest teaching hospitals, has added engineering concepts to improvement projects. This presentation will show how engineering has helped to transform the delivery of hospital services in the operating rooms at UHN
